Quotations--Ellipses When you alter the quoted material in any way, you need to indicate to your reader that you have done so. Use an ellipsis of three dots ( ) to eliminate parts of a source you do not wish to quote. For material omitted at the end of the sentence, add a period to the three ellipsis dots.
There are two basic types of short form case citations. The first one includes an abbreviated case name, the volume number and reporter, and the pinpoint page number. The second, id., is used when you are referring to the immediately preceding authority (i.e., for two or more consecutive citations to the same case).
An alternate method of formatting a short quotation is to include the author(s) and year of publication in the introductory clause, while the original page number remains in parentheses at the end of the sentence. Consider the placement of the authors name and year of publication as the quotation is introduced.
Put commas and periods within quotation marks, except when a parenthetical reference follows. He said, I may forget your name, but I never forget a face. History is stained with blood spilled in the name of civilization.
You can shorten quotes by removing words from the middle of the quote and adding ellipses to indicate that you have removed some words.
The ellipsis mark indicates that you left some material out of a direct quote.
To indicate short quotations (four typed lines or fewer of prose or three lines of verse) in your text, enclose the quotation within double quotation marks.
You can use an ellipsisthree consecutive periods, with one space around each ( . . . )to leave out extra or unnecessary words. The ellipsis represents information that you are omitting from a quotation.
