Using a process known as check washing, mail snatchers erase the ink on a check with chemicals found in common household cleaning products and then reuse the checks by rewriting them to themselves. Then when you check your bank statement, you see that your check went through and the amount matches.
If you accidentally mess up an endorsement, cross out the endorsement with a simple line and put your initials next to it. Then, youll re-endorse the check with a proper signature.
Sign the check with your normal signature. Carefully look over everything before you give it to someone or mail it. You generally cant cross out anything and rewrite it, especially the numbers or entire payee. If you mess up and cant write over it cleanly, you should write VOID really big on the check and start over.
How to correctly make changes to your check. If you made a small mistake on a check youre writing, do not use whiteout! Simply draw one line straight through your mistake, initial next to it, and then continue to fill out the rest of your check.
Cross out the mistake by drawing one neat line through the middle of the mistake. Do not scribble it out or black it out as banks still need to see why the correction was made. Essentially you dont want to hide the error but rather show what mistake was made and why it was corrected.
Even if you cross out your mistake and initial it, your bank may not validate it. These kinds of corrections often mean that someone has altered the check without the owner knowing, leading the bank to believe your check isnt authentic.
Here are steps you can take to correct a mistake youve made while writing a check: Step 1: Cross out the mistake by drawing one neat line through the middle of the mistake. Step 2: Write the correction above the crossed-out mistake neatly. Step 3: Initial your correction to authenticate it.
