Crossing a cheque is the instruction given to the paying banker to transfer the specified amount from the payer account to the payee account rather than paying it over the counter at the time of payment. The act of crossing a cheque serves as a protection against the misuse of cheques in financial transactions.
The words show that the cheque must be paid only into the account of the person to whom it is written: Crossing a cheque with a/c payee means that the cheque cannot be used by someone else.
Crossed checks are also considered non-transferable. They cant be signed over to a third party. The only action permitted is for the payee to deposit the check in an account that the payee holds in their name.
You cant make changes after a money order has been processed. If you make a mistake in filling out the payees name and dont fix it, the recipient likely will run into trouble cashing the money order.
By writing account payee or A/C payee only on the cheque, the person instructs the bank to transfer funds directly to the specified beneficiarys bank account. It prevents fraud and unauthorised transactions, promoting electronic money transfers rather than cash deals.
If the cheque is crossed (as almost all are these days), it can only be paid into an account in the name of the person it was written out to: it cannot be paid into anothers account, nor can it be cashed1 see the rules on Crossed cheques.
A crossed cheque is a type of cheque where two parallel lines are drawn across the face of the cheque, either vertically or diagonally. This crossing signifies that the cheque can only be deposited directly into a bank account and cannot be encashed over the counter.
Cheques are referred to as crossed cheques when the A/C payee is not written between the lines placed at the corners of a cheque. The back of the crossed cheque can be signed to obtain cheque endorsing assistance. However, once the account payee is written, the cheque cannot be endorsable.
