Yes. The IRS requires that you report all of your income, even if its less than $600 and you didnt get a tax form for it. Follow these steps to enter your income. Well ask you some questions to determine if your income is from self-employment or is ordinary income.
Under this new reporting rule, if you received over $600 through an online platform, you would get a Form 1099-K, and so would the IRS. By lowering the threshold to $600 and notifying the IRS after one transaction is made, the government is making it harder for taxpayers to avoid paying those taxes.
This is a positive development for most taxpayers, as those with more than $600 but less than $5,000 in transactions will not experience this new tax reporting to the IRS until tax year 2024. However, even with this delay, the new reporting rule creates a tax dilemma.
The new $600 rule Under the new rules set forth by the IRS, if you got paid more than $600 for the transaction of goods and services through third-party payment platforms, you will receive a 1099-K for reporting the income.
The implementation of the new law that requires TPSOs to issue a Form 1099-K to anyone who received more than $600 in a year will move from the 2023 tax year to tax year 2024.
Does Zelle report any payments I receive over $600 to the IRS? Zelle does not report any transactions made on the Zelle Network to the IRS, even if the total is more than $600. The law requiring certain payment networks to provide forms 1099K for information reporting does not apply to the Zelle Network.
Selling personal items at a gain If an individual sold items at a gain, which means they paid less than for what they sold it, they will have to report that gain as income, and its taxable. See IRS.gov What to do with Form 1099-K for specific instruction on how to report personal item sales.
What this means. This means that for 2023 and prior years, payment apps and online marketplaces are only required to send out Forms 1099-K to taxpayers who receive over $20,000 and have over 200 transactions. For tax year 2024, the IRS plans for a threshold of $5,000 to phase in reporting requirements.
