Cross out the mistake and write the correction on the check. Write the correction above the mistake neatly. Avoid scribbling out the mistakejust one solid line will do. If its a misspelled name, write the misspelled name and the corrected name on the back of the check with your signature.
Part of the process of writing a check is listing who should receive the funds, and most checks go to a specific payee. That step makes checks safer than cash because the named payee is the only person allowed to deposit or handle the check (although it can be signed over to somebody else, which well discuss below).
Write Pay to the Order of and the third partys name below your signature. Its important to write the name of the person that you are signing the check over to in the endorsement area under your signature. This signals to the bank that you are endorsing the transfer of ownership for the check.
Pay to the Order of is where you write the name of the person or business that is to receive the funds of the check. Be sure that you know this information, as any mistakes may make it difficult for the check to be cashed.
On the line that says Pay to the order of, write the name of the individual or company youd like to pay, known as the payee. Use the payees full name instead of a nickname. If you dont know the exact name, you can write cash here. Be aware that if a check is made out to cash, anyone can cash or deposit it.
Its important to make sure all the information is correct. The name in the endorsement must match the payee (Pay to the Order Of) name on the front of the check.
The name in the endorsement must match the payee (Pay to the Order Of) name on the front of the check. If someone gives you a check and theyve spelled your name incorrectly, endorse the back of the check with the incorrect spelling, and then sign your name with the correct spelling on the back of the check.
If youre depositing a check in someone elses name into your account: That person needs to endorse the check to allow you to deposit it. Generally, the person should write Pay to the order of [Your Name] on the back of the check and then sign it.
