How is an ACL injury diagnosed? An ACL tear can be diagnosed by a physician through a history and physical examination. On physical examination, the physician can specifically assess the amount of motion present and determine if the ACL is torn.
The short answer is yes. After the pain and swelling subsides and if there is no other injury to your knee, you may be able to walk in straight lines, go up and down stairs and even potentially jog in a straight line. The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is an important ligament that provides stability to the knee.
Some people can live and function normally with a torn ACL. However, most people complain that their knee is unstable and may give out with physical activity. Unstable knee after ACL tears can lead to further knee damage. You are also less likely to return to the same level of sports without the ACL.
Symptoms A loud pop or a popping sensation in the knee. Severe pain and inability to continue activity. Rapid swelling. Loss of range of motion. A feeling of instability or giving way with weight bearing.
The Lachman test is the most accurate test for detecting an ACL tear. Magnetic resonance imaging is the primary study used to diagnose ACL injury in the United States. It can also identify concomitant meniscal injury, collateral ligament tear, and bone contusions.
Full tears of the ACL and MCL are serious and can affect future movement. If the MCL or ACL tears, the result is usually pain, swelling, stiffness, and instability. In most cases, the injured person can still walk with the torn knee ligament. But the movement will be severely limited, not to mention painful.
An ACL tear is when the anterior cruciate ligament becomes partially or completely ruptured. Most ACL tears are complete tears and can be torn from the femur (thighbone), tibia (shin bone), or in the center of the ligament. The most common location for a tear is the center of the ligament.
ACL injuries are considered sprains and vary in severity. ACL Sprain (Grade 1): The ligament is damaged and stretched but can keep the knee stable. Partial ACL Tear (Grade 2): The ACL stretches and becomes loose.
