The last name identifies from which family the person belongs. In some countries, the last name is given more preference while identifying an individual. The last name also describes an individuals background, religion, or culture. Using the last name with the first name is considered a tradition in many places.
A two letter monogram in traditional format will place both letters side by side the same size, and like the cypher can be used to either combine a first and last name or to combine two last names. A single initial can represent either the first or last name.
Traditional Monogram For an individual, the order of initials is the first name, last name, and middle name. The last name initial (center) is larger than those on either side.
A traditional 3 letter monogram is the persons first name initial on the left, the last name initial in the middle larger, and the middle name initial on the right. If the monogram is for a married woman, it has been traditional to substitute her maiden name initial for her middle name initial on the right.
Turns out that crossing out the printed named with a pen stroke delivered by your own hand is meant to make the letter seem much more personal. Etiquette-wise that, its a sign that you are a closer friend of that person, Kate Pickett of Picketts Press told the magazine.
The standard three-letter monogram order places a larger last name initial in the center, with the first and middle initials in the same but smaller font, one on either side. Therefore, the monogram letters for Fannie Lou Hamer would be FLH, or more accurately FHL, with the H larger in the center.
Etiquette-wise that, its a sign that you are a closer friend of that person, says Kate Pickett of Picketts Press, who crosses her own name out on notes when shes on a first-name basis with the recipients. I just see it as a sign of being friendly.
Traditionally, a monogram reads First Name Initial, Last Name Initial, Middle Name or Maiden Name Initial. With the Last Name Initial being the larger Middle Initial.
