The New Brunswick Flag is flown at half-mast, upon the death of an important person, at provincial buildings, sites, establishments, schools, and vessels usually from the time of notification of death up to and including the day of the funeral and in ance with these rules.
New Brunswick Provincial Flag The symbols depicted on the flag are taken from the Coat of Arms assigned by Royal Warrant of Queen Victoria on May 26, 1868. They are a gold lion on a red field across the top and an ancient galley with its oars in action across the base.
The lower part of the shield displays an ancient galley, most probably a reflection of the importance of shipbuilding and seafaring to New Brunswick in the 19th century. The galley is also based on the design of the provinces original great seal, which featured a sailing ship on water.
The governor generals flag is blue with the crest of the Arms of Canada in its centre. A symbol of the sovereignty of Canada, the crest consists of a gold lion wearing the Royal Crown and holding in its right paw a red maple leaf. The lion stands on a wreath of the official colours of Canada.
The black-capped chickadee was proclaimed as the official bird of New Brunswick in August 1983, following a contest conducted by the provincial Federation of Naturalists.
The arms of Brunswick consist of two gold lions on a red field, and the arms of the King contained the three gold lions of England. The gold lion in the flag therefore reflects New Brunswicks relationship both to the Duchy of Brunswick and England.
Motto. The motto, Spem reduxit means Hope Restored, refers to the provinces having acted as a haven for Loyalist refugees who fled there after the American Revolution.
SPEM REDUXIT, meaning Hope restored.
