Because XPS is a surface technique, there is a limited amount of organic information XPS can provide. XPS is limited to measurements of elements having atomic numbers of 3 or greater, making it unable to detect hydrogen or helium. XPS spectra also take a long time to obtain. A ghost peak is a peak that appears at a position where we do not expect a peak. It is a component that shows up in the system and it may show up everywhere in the chromatogram. Sometimes it is a sharp peak, sometimes its a broad peak or a hump and sometimes it is a rising baseline.
Ghost peaks are of unknown origin in a chromatogram, are easily misidentified when they are close to peaks of interest, and can result in quantitative errors when they overlap peaks of interest. Uncertainty in data quality and reliability is of course the result.
For the latter ones, they are called system peaks or ghost peaks since they are not real sample peaks. Because light scattering intensity is highly sensitive to large-sized particles, even very small amounts of those large particles will result in a peak. How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus. Various types of ghost peaks are widely observed in the separation process of HPLC, which can be basically attributed to the improper selection of mobile phase [1] and diluents, impurities in the reagents, additives [2], containers, consumables [3] or instruments, or the reaction between samples and injection vials [
When laboratory X-ray sources are used, XPS easily detects all elements except hydrogen and helium. The detection limit is in the parts per thousand range, but parts per million (ppm) are achievable with long collection times and concentration at top surface. Ghost peaks in chromatography are unwanted peaks that appear at an interval less than the expected retention time. These peaks are generally caused by interactions of other compounds or metabolites with the solvent and stationary phase, which leads to a decrease in separation.
