Etymology. The term derives from hat trick, and since four is bigger than three, the rationale was that a four-strikeout performance should be represented by a bigger hat, such as a sombrero.
The History of the Strikeout Another reason the letter K is used is that it is made with 3 strokes of the pencil, symbolizing the 3 strikes for the strikeout. Chadwick also used a backward K when a batter strikes out looking or called out on the third strike because it isnt as common as striking out swinging.
A forwards oriented K represents a strikeout swinging; a backwards oriented K ( ) represents a strikeout looking.

There was a crossroads between sacrifice and strikeout. In the end, the former won the coveted S, the latter K. Chadwick originally established that a K as it is written means a strikeout swinging, whereas a backwards K signifies a strikeout looking.
If the next batter hits a ball to the center fielder who catches it on the fly for the second out, it would be noted as F8, with F for flyout and 8 for the center fielder. (In some systems, the letter F is reserved for foul outs.
In the scorebook, a strikeout is denoted by the letter K. A third-strike call on which the batter doesnt swing is denoted with a backward K.
Chadwick often used either the first or last letter of key words in his scoring scheme. He used K to represent struck out because it is the last letter in struck. Like many of Chadwicks innovations, this symbol is still used today.
