Atomic percent represents the proportion of a specific elements atoms relative to the total number of atoms detected at the surface of the material. It is calculated by dividing the number of atoms of a specific element by the total number of atoms detected in the XPS analysis. About XPS experiments: whats the difference between Atomic % and ResearchGate post AboutXPSexpe ResearchGate post AboutXPSexpe
For each element, lets call this value m. Add all the values of m together, and lets call this value m(Total). Now, for each value of m, divide it by m(Total), to obtain a. Multiplying the resulting values of a by 100 gives us the atomic percent values, for each respective element in the starting compound.
Figure 2: Quantification regions The peak intensities measure how much of a material is at the surface, while the peak positions indicate the elemental and chemical composition. Other values, such as the full width at half maximum (FWHM) are useful indicators of chemical state changes and physical influences. The atomic ratio is a measure of the ratio of atoms of one kind (i) to another kind (j). A closely related concept is the atomic percent (or at. %), which gives the percentage of one kind of atom relative to the total number of atoms. The molecular equivalents of these concepts are the molar fraction, or molar percent.
In XPS analysis, the position of a peak on the x-axis indicates the elemental and chemical composition. This axis is traditionally displayed as Binding Energy in electron volts (eV).
The ratio D = Ap/B of the XPS peak area Ap to the increase in background signal 30 eV below the peak energy is evaluated under variation of the path length R travelled by the photoelectron, the XPS peak energy Ep, and the particular metal M.
