The animated gif is also comfortably millennial: invented in 1989, it pre-dates not only smartphones and social media but even the world wide web.
As an interesting fact, GIFs are older than the World Wide Web itself. Steve Wilhite introduced the GIF on June 15, 1987 while he was working at CompuServe, the first major online service provider in the US. CompuServe was founded in 1969.
GIF An animated GIF of a rotating globe Filename extension.gif Initial release 15 June 1987 Latest release 89a 1989 Type of format lossless bitmap image format6 more rows
In 1987, Wilhite figured out how to compress images so they wouldnt lose their sharpness, would load quickly and could appear on any computer and the Graphics Interchange Format, or GIF, was born. The very first GIF was of a clip art airplane soaring through a pixelated sky. Initially, GIFs were still images.
Wilhite was working at CompuServe in 1987 when he invented the GIF. I saw the format I wanted in my head and then I started programming, he told The New York Times in 2013, saying the first image was an airplane and insisting that the file had only one pronunciation a soft G, like Jif peanut butter.
How long can an animated GIF be? The same, there is no restriction on the length of a GIF. While some platforms have ruled it. (Such as, GIPHY suggests uploading a GIF no more than 6 seconds and it wont accept a 15 seconds plus GIF.)
