During the summer of 1916, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) coordinated a strike of iron ore miners on the Mesabi Iron Range. The strikers fought for higher wages, an eight-hour workday, and workplace reform. Although the strike failed, it was one of the largest labor conflicts in Minnesota history.
Living and working conditions on the Iron Range were poor, and mining companies openly discriminated against immigrant miners by giving them the most dangerous and lowest paying jobs.
Explanation: Harlan County USA is a landmark documentary film structured as a chronological narrative, covering the Brookside Strike of coal miners in Kentucky in the 1970s. The director, Barbara Kopple, uses primary source material such as interviews, actual occurrences, and songs to tell the story.
The Coal strike of 1902 (also known as the anthracite coal strike) was a strike by the United Mine Workers of America in the anthracite coalfields of eastern Pennsylvania. Miners struck for higher wages, shorter workdays, and the recognition of their union.
On September 1, a force of over 5,000 miners from the north side of the Kanawha River joined the strikers tent city, leading Governor Glasscock to establish martial law in the region the following day.
Tired of ethnic discrimination as well as dangerous working conditions, low wages, and long work days, immigrant iron miners on the Mesabi Range in northeastern Minnesota went on strike on July 20, 1907.
