If the person is not breathing, immediately begin mouth-to-mouth rescue breaths. If they do not have a pulse, start chest compressions as well (CPR). Continue resuscitation efforts until help arrives.
Call 911 immediately if someone has been struck by lightning. Next, see if it is safe to touch the person. Move him or her to a safer area if there is a continued danger from lightning strikes. If the person is not breathing or has no pulse, start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and continue until help arrives.
Common injuries caused by lightning include: muscle pains, broken bones, cardiac arrest, confusion, hearing loss, seizures, burns, behavioral changes, and ocular cataracts. Loss of consciousness is very common immediately after a strike.
If the person is not breathing, immediately begin mouth-to-mouth rescue breaths. If they do not have a pulse, start chest compressions as well (CPR). Continue resuscitation efforts until help arrives.
Initial treatment should begin with assessment and stabilization of the airway, breathing, and circulation. Persons who have been struck by lightning should be treated as trauma patients, with close attention to spinal immobilization.
Thus, when performing triage at a multiple-casualty lightning-strike incident, the patients in respiratory and cardiac arrest should be treated first.
In addition, ground current can travel in garage floors with conductive materials. Because the ground current affects a much larger area than the other causes of lightning casualties, the ground current causes the most lightning deaths and injuries. Ground current also kills many farm animals.
Thus, when performing triage at a lightning strike scene with more than one patient, it should be done in reverse order from what is typical, even if several patients are involved. The patient in respiratory or cardiac arrest is the priority and should be the first person to receive emergency care.
