Well, today marks the third week of a UC strike involving higher education academic workers. And while progress is being made, many students say theyre feeling the immediate impact in their classroom studies. ABCs Kurt Rivera took a visit to UC Merced and has the latest now. On the campus of UC Merced, 19 year old mechanical engineering student Brian Ixcoy is scrambling to learn all he can with final exams approaching in two weeks. Definitely more studying than what I would usually do, so definitely meeting up with more people and discussing the topics more. Thats because postdoctoral scholars, as well as graduate assistants and researchers who lead discussions on topics and lab work in the classroom, are instead holding picket signs and out on strike. Its no different for students at UC Davis grading labs. I know for myself, a lot of my labs are impacted. 48,000 are on strike, represented by the United Auto Workers Union. The amount of workers striking grew to 48,000 until 12,000 postdoctoral scholars and academic researchers agreed to a contact with the University of California, ending their strike and returning to all 10 of the UC campuses.
Graduate student researchers will make a minimum of $34,564 for nine months of part-time work by Oct. 1, 2024. Postdoctoral scholars will receive an increase in minimum annual pay for their full-time positions from about $55,000 to $70,000 or higher with various adjustments by the end of the five-year contract.
The graduate student workers demanded that the UC stop charging international and other out-of-state students an additional enrollment fee, typically around $15,000 annually.
Demanding better wages and benefits, workers have withheld their labor of grading assignments, instructing undergraduates and conducting research, while more than 430 tenured and tenure-track faculty members canceled lectures and withheld grades in solidarity.
The graduate student workers demanded that the UC stop charging international and other out-of-state students an additional enrollment fee, typically around $15,000 annually.
A common tactic of student protest is to go on strike (sometimes called a boycott of classes), which occurs when students enrolled at a teaching institution such as a school, college or university refuse to go to class. It is meant to resemble strike action by organized labour.
