George is described as small and quick. This is in contrast to Lennie who is big and slow. George is clever but quick to anger. Lennie is not clever and is slow to lose his temper.
To make these characters seem to be completely opposite he uses words that are opposite. For example he describes George as small and quick whereas he describes Lennie as a huge man. this immediately makes the reader create an image in their mind of two opposite people.
Man vs. Man. The physical fight that takes place between Lennie and Curley is an example of a Man vs. Man vs. Himself. The climax, or turning point, of the novel occurs when Lennie accidentally kills Curleys wife. Man vs. Nature. Man vs. Society.
One of the most pivotal conflicts of the novel occurs in the form of man vs. himself as George struggles with decisions surrounding his friend, Lennie. Ultimately he kills Lennie to protect Lennie from society, and society from Lennie.
Crooks is the only black man on the ranch and experiences a docHub amount of racism and discrimination. He is lonely and isolated, making him resentful and bitter towards the other characters, as seen when he tries to torment Lennie about George abandoning him.
Lennie is very innocent and sweet-natured; he always means well and is focused on simple pleasures, which his dream with George reminds the reader of. He lacks awareness of social conventions and so does not feel the same racism and prejudice against women that many of the other male characters feel.
George Milton is portrayed as a sharp, quick-tempered man in Of Mice and Men, but evolves into a selfless, caring one. George and Lennies relationship, described like a master and his dog, is what drives most of the action.
Whats interesting about the contrast? Lennie: big, clumsy, shapeless face, large pale eyes, wide sloping shoulders, walks heavily, animal-like George: small, quick, sharp, strong, features, more cautious. What is interesting about this contrast is that usually, the bigger man will lead the smaller one.
