So what is a GIF? A .gif is an image file format that stands for Graphics Interchange Format. Its an animated image that is mostly used on the web and grew in popularity due to memes and social media GIFs. As an actual file format, its pretty terrible today because of its weak compression engine, but thats quite understandable given that its latest release was in 1989, literally 32 years ago. The format supports a colour palette of up to 256 different colours, which makes it a bit limited. That was great in the 90s when it grew in popularity, but its not ideal today.
