Thunder, high winds, darkening skies, rainfall and brilliant flashes of light are warning signs for lightning strikes. repeatedly if it is a tall, isolated object. or near a tree. times each year.
When You See Lightning, Count The Time Until You Hear Thunder. If That Is 30 Seconds Or Less, The Thunderstorm Is Close Enough To Be Dangerous Seek Shelter (if you cant see the lightning, just hearing the thunder is a good back-up rule). Wait 30 Minutes Or More After The Lightning Flash Before Leaving Shelter.
When you see the flash of a lightning bolt, you can start counting seconds and then divide to see how far away the lightning struck. If it takes 10 seconds for the thunder to roll in, the lightning struck about 2 miles or 3 kilometers away.
If you count the number of seconds between the flash of lightning and the sound of thunder, and then divide by 5, youll get the distance in miles to the lightning: 5 seconds = 1 mile, 15 seconds = 3 miles, 0 seconds = very close.
Simply count the number of seconds between the flash and the sound of thunder and divide by 5 to get the distance in miles. So, 1 second = less than a mile (a fifth of a mile), 5 seconds = 1 mile, 20 seconds = 4 miles, etc.
A resolution of 3.6 or 3.0 arcsec would pinpoint a location to within about 100 m, but the error bars on the lightning location are actually larger. The average accuracy of the strike location is more like 500 m. The image below illustrates the situation. The fine grid represents 3 arcsec latitude and longitude bins.
The National Weather Service recommends taking cover if the time between the lightning flash and the rumble of thunder is 30 seconds or less, which indicates the lightning is about 6 miles away or closer.
The rule of thumb is that every 3 seconds of delay between a flash to thunder, equates to a distance of 1 kilometre, so when there is a 30 second flash-to-thunder time interval, the lightning activity is approximately 10 km away.
Storms are scanned by radar to determine the degree of electrification and potential for lightning occurrence. The method used by such systems includes the stationing of at least three receivers at known locations in order to triangulate their data.
If you count the number of seconds between the flash of lightning and the sound of thunder, and then divide by 5, youll get the distance in miles to the lightning: 5 seconds = 1 mile, 15 seconds = 3 miles, 0 seconds = very close.
