Strike means an organized and intentional stoppage or slowdown of work by employees, intending to make the employer comply with the demands of the employees. For example, a strike may seek higher pay, better benefits, or safer working conditions.
During a strike the company loses money every day that striking workers are able to shut down production. Often companies try to bring in new workers to take the place of striking workers. These new workers must cross lines of picketing strikers to enter the workplace. This usually upsets the strikers very much.
The decision to call a strike does not come easily, because union workers risk a loss of income for long periods of time. They also risk the permanent loss of their jobs, especially when replacement workers hired to continue operations during the strike stay on as permanent employees.
When workers strike over unfair labor practices, they cant be fired and they cant be permanently replaced. Employers can hire temporary replacements during an unfair labor practice strike, but once the strike ends, workers are entitled to have their jobs back.
You cannot be fired for participating in a protected strike or picketing, depending on the purposes and means of the strike action. Under federal law, you cannot be fired for participating in a protected strike or picketing against your employer. There are limitations and qualifications on the exercise of that right.
This is a clear indication that strikes are more likely to reduce the production of an organization, as well as result in a firm losing customers. On the other, one of the consequences of strikes on employees is that they may lose their remuneration.
Finally, the last five rows of Table 1 present information on strike The authors of the Third Report (and later Bureau of Labor reports) coded strikes as union successes, failures, or partial successes. Close to one-half of all strikes were successful, while 40 percent were failures.
A strike usually takes place in response to employee grievances. Strikes became common during the Industrial Revolution, when mass labor became important in factories and mines. As striking became a more common practice, governments were often pushed to act (either by private business or by union workers).
