SAG members were fighting for better pay and working conditions as they face a labor landscape transformed by streaming and threatened by artificial intelligence. With streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Max reshaping the culture of television and movie-watching, the nature of actors pay has changed as well.
How Long Did the Strike Last? The actors strike lasted a total of 118 days. The last time both SAG and WGA went on strike in 1960, SAG came to an agreement in six weeks, while the WGA took 148 days.
Hollywoods actors union has docHubed a deal with studios to end its strike. AP correspondent Margie Szaroleta reports on whats next for Hollywood. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRAs executive director and chief negotiator, said the gains made in the deal justified the struggle.
The WGA demanded increased minimum compensation in all areas of media, increased residuals, appropriate TV series-writing compensation from pre- to postproduction, increased contributions to pension and health plans, the strengthening of professional standards and the overall protections for writers, and more.
Why did actors strike? Actors and other SAG-AFTRA members were fighting for better pay and working conditions, as well as contracts that include provisions on artificial intelligence. Dwindling compensation is one major concern for the union, especially around payments called residuals.
Hollywoods actors have voted to ratify the deal with studios that ended their strike after nearly four months, bringing an official finish to the labor strife that shook the entertainment industry for most of 2023.
In addition to standing in solidarity with the writers, the strike was led by changes in the industry caused by streaming and its effect on residuals, as well as other new technologies like AI and digital recreation.
Set deconstruction is also known as the strike. Sets are deconstructed in order to build up the next scene, but complete deconstruction and removal from the stage of sets, props, costumes, lights, and sound equipment occurs when the show ends its run at the venue.
