The strike began on May 16, 1934 with workers from just 46 of the 166 trucking firms walking off their jobs. Workers from the remaining 120 firms were supposed to report to work if their employers needed them, but they were not needed because trucking in Minneapolis effectively ceased. Strikers picketed for up to 15 hours at strategic points from the Market District to the city limits to ensure that only union authorized trucks were on the roads.
