A strike usually takes place in response to employee grievances. Strikes became common during the Industrial Revolution, when mass labor became important in factories and mines. As striking became a more common practice, governments were often pushed to act (either by private business or by union workers).
Most of the workers who took part in the Winnipeg General Strike were neither socialists nor communists. They simply wanted to have higher wages and better working conditions. The first workers to go on strike were in the building and metal trades. Their employers would not listen to their demands.
The main types of strikes covered by the NLRA are: Unfair labor practice strikes, which protest employers illegal activities. Economic strikes, which may occur when there are disputes over wages or benefits. Recognition strikes, which are intended to force employers to recognize unions.
They saw the strike as a means to gain employment, higher wages, the right to collective bargaining, and better working conditions.
In Winnipeg, Manitoba, workers in the building and metal trades negotiated with their managers for job improvements. They wanted the right to collective bargaining, better wages and better working conditions. Workers staged several strikes in early May 1919.
A strike is an organized stoppage of work conducted by laborers in order to impose bargaining power against employers. Strikes may be carried out in response to dangerous working conditions, unfair treatment, low wages, or any other workplace grievance that negatively impacts workers safety or wellbeing.
Canadians were angry with some demanding better wages and working conditions and others demanding jobs. As unrest grew, on May 1, 1919, Winnipegs building and metal workers went on strike for higher wages and within a few weeks, the strikers were joined by 30,000 union and non-union workers in support of the strike.
