Consignment occurs when goods are sent by their owner (the consignor) to an agent (the consignee), who undertakes to sell the goods. The consignor continues to own the goods until they are sold, so the goods appear as inventory in the accounting records of the consignor, not the consignee.
Consignment goods are stored in the warehouse of the retailer, but ownership of these goods is retained by the consignor. The responsibility for maintaining and selling them falls on the consignee. The consignor also counts these goods in their physical counts of inventory.
A consignment agreement is a contract that places an item the consignor (or owner) owns with the consignee (or seller) for the consignee to sell. The consignee often takes a commission or fee and then the remainder of the sale price is paid to the consignor.
When the consignor sends goods to the consignee, a journal entry is not needed. However, when the consignee sells the goods received, they pay the consignor a predetermined sale amount. The consignor would then record a debit to cash and a credit to sales.
Goods held on consignment are included in the inventory of the supplier (consignor), not the retailer (consignee).
Consignors liability A serious issue to consider in consignment selling is that of liability for merchandise. Since the consignor remains owner and title does not pass to the consignee, legally the liability rests with the consignor, in the absence of any other agreement.
Consignment Accounting - Initial Transfer of Goods Periodically send a statement to the consignee, stating the inventory that should be on the consignees premises. The consignee can use this statement to conduct a periodic reconciliation of the actual amount on hand to the consignors records.
Accounting treatment in the Books of Consignor So entire profit or loss belongs to the consignor and consignee receives the commission as his remuneration. On the consignment of the goods, the consignor also sends a Performa invoice. When the consignee remits money, he sends Account sale to the consignor.
