Save-the-dates and invitations serve different purposes when it comes to making people aware of your wedding day. Both provide details about the event, but the save-the-date does so at an earlier time in usually a less thorough way than the invitation.
Friends and family might give you different answers, but luckily the wedding industry has aligned on a general rule of thumb. Typically wedding save the dates go out four to six months before the ceremony long before you send out your wedding invitations.
A Save the Date tells your guest to do exactly that, reserve the date in their calendar. While it does give some information about when and where your wedding will be held, the role of this card is to allow guests to plan in advance and also let them know that a formal invitation will be sent at a later date.
Save the Date (or similar: save our date were getting married hold the date mark your calendar) Wedding date. Bride and grooms names. Wedding location (city and state the venue isnt listed on save the dates)
Youll always want to send some type of official invitation to guests for your wedding. Save-the-date cards, however, are optional. Its important to know when to send your Save the Dates if you choose to use them as timing is so important for these cards.
Are you invited? A save the date card doesnt necessarily mean that youre invited to the wedding it simply means that youre on the proposed guest list. The final guest list can be subject to change, for example, if there are unexpected changes with the venue, meaning fewer people can come.
While its certainly okay for these two types of wedding stationery to match, its not required by etiquette experts nor will guests be surprised if your save the dates and invitations look totally different.
The basic rule of thumb is to send save the dates 6 months before the wedding. For a destination wedding, it is customary to mail save the dates 8 to 12 months in advance. For a local affair, send save the dates 4 to 6 months in advance.
