Instead, create a new column next to the column that has the cell you want to split and then split the cell. You can also split the contents of a cell into multiple adjacent cells.
To divide columns in Excel, just do the following: Divide two cells in the topmost row, for example: =A2/B2. Insert the formula in the first cell (say C2) and double-click the small green square in the lower-right corner of the cell to copy the formula down the column. Done!
Split existing data In Sheets, select the column that contains the data that you want to split. Click Data. Split text to columns. If you want Sheets to detect when a file is formatted using fixed-width, select Detect automatically.
