Conceptual differences Storm and Flink can process unbounded data streams in real-time with low latency. Storm uses tuples, spouts, and bolts that construct its stream processing topology. For Flink, you need sources, operators, and sinks to process events within its data pipeline.
For achieving exactly-once in this scenario, Flink enables coordination of writing to an external system with its internal checkpoint mechanism. The external systems must provide a means to commit or roll back writes so that those events can be triggered and coordinated with Flinks checkpoint management.
Flink offers native streaming, while Spark uses micro batches to emulate streaming. That means Flink processes each event in real-time and provides very low latency. Spark, by using micro-batching, can only deliver near real-time processing. For many use cases, Spark provides acceptable performance levels.
Event time is the time that is embedded in the data itself. It is most often, though not required to be, the time that an event actually occurs. This is important to use because it provides a more robust way of comparing events against one another. The challenge here is that event data can be late or out of order.
Apache Flink is an excellent choice to develop and run many different types of applications due to its extensive features set. Flinks features include support for stream and batch processing, sophisticated state management, event-time processing semantics, and exactly-once consistency guarantees for state.
Event time: Event time is the time that each individual event occurred on its producing device. This time is typically embedded within the records before they enter Flink, and that event timestamp can be extracted from each record. In event time, the progress of time depends on the data, not on any wall clocks.
Event time is independent of the timestamps maintained by the system. Processing time refers to the timestamp when an event was seen (or processed) by the system. In this case, the timestamp when the system fetches a post will be considered as processing time.
The difference to event time is that this ingestion timestamp is generated when the record is appended to the target topic by the Kafka broker, not when the record is created at the source. The difference to processing time is that processing time is when the stream processing application processes the record.
Watermark is a method to measure the progress of the event time. With event time, every input event has an embedded timestamp. This timestamp can be used for watermarks to indicate the time of incoming events to the operator.
The default time characteristic in Apache Flink is processing time. However, it might be necessary to update Flinks settings to event time if an application works asynchronously or with distributed systems.
