Unlike the well-known journal impact factor, SNIP corrects for differences in citation practices between scientific fields, thereby allowing for more accurate between-field comparisons of citation impact.
It measures contextual citation impact by weighting citations based on the total number of citations in a subject field, using Scopus data. As shared in the quick reference card displayed, SNIP is derived by taking a journals citation count per paper and dividing it by the citation potential in its subject field.
So a journal with a SJR value 1 has above average citation potential and journal with a SJR value
The SNIP is a ratio between a journals Impact per Publication (IPP) as the numerator and its Database Citation Potential (DCP) as the denominator (i.e. SNIP = IPP/DCP).
Find SJR and SNIP in Scopus Locate SJR and SNIP by Journal Title. Go to . Type in the journal title in the search box and click Find Sources. The SJR and SNIP of the journal title are listed. Locate SJR and SNIP by Subject area. Go to .
A SNIP of 1.0 indicates that the journal is exactly average for citations for its field; numbers above 1.0 mean the journal performs better than other journals in the field, and numbers below 1.0 show that the journal performs less well than other journals in the same field.
A SNIP of 1.0 means that a journals articles are cited at the average rate for all journals in the same subject area; anything over 1.0 indicates more citations than average in the field while a SNIP of less than 1.0 is below the average. A SNIP of more than 1.5 generally indicates a very well-cited journal.
SNIP (Source Normalized Impact per Paper) measures citations received by articles in the journal against citations expected for the subject field. SJR (Scimago Journal Rank) aims to capture the effect of subject field, quality, and reputation of a journal on citations.
