In some cases, an ACL tear can appear similar to ACL degeneration, which is a more long-standing process. A partial tear of the ACL may also be misdiagnosed as a normal ACL since these injuries can be subtle in appearance. ACL tears are also often misdiagnosed as collateral ligament knee strains.

Most dogs that have ruptured their ACL will be very painful for the first few days and then will seem a little more comfortable after that. This is just like any of us with an injury-- drop a brick on your toe and it hurts a bunch at first and then settles down after that.
Despite their prevalence, CCL injuries are frequently misdiagnosed. In most cases, CCL damage is caused by slow degeneration from a longstanding injury rather than a sudden tear. As a result, ligament injuries are often an underlying source of pain, mobility issues, and arthritis.
In addition to performing physical exams, your vet will likely take x-rays of your dogs knee. That way, other causes of lameness in your dogs knee can be eliminated. This means that the full extent of the damage can be accurately assessed.
While humans often injure their ACLs while playing sports such as soccer or basketball, dogs are more likely to have degenerative issues that become apparent over time, but traumatic injuries can also occur. Dogs with complete ACL/ CCL tears cannot walk and need time to recover.
Its hard to tell the difference between an ACL tear and a sprain, but the significance of the symptoms is the easiest way to tell them apart. If your dog is having difficulty walking, it may be a sign that its just a sprain where the inability to walk is often a tear.
Unlike the ACL in people, in dogs, the cruciate ligament is load-bearing because a dogs leg remains bent while they are standing. If your dogs cruciate becomes injured or torn, your dogs knee will become unstable, reducing your pups ability to run and walk normally and causing pain.
