Many scripts begin with a transition, which may include FADE IN: or BLACK SCREEN. Some place this in the top left, others in the top right of the page where many transitions live. Other scripts will begin with scene headings, or even subheadings of imagery they want to front load.
If youve set up your screenwriting software to use two blank lines above your scene headers (triple spacing), you need to ensure that there is only one blank line (double spacing) after FADE IN: Failure to do so may brand you an amateur right out of the box. This rule also applies to all other transitions.
Under Document Page Layout Options are the four possible line spacing settings: Loose, Normal, Tight and Very Tight: Set to Normal, a 100-page (exactly) script in the default Final Draft screenplay template (US Letter) repaginates (roughly) at: Loose: 106. Tight: 95.
Use Page Layout Line Spacing to adjust line spacing overall.
Use Page Layout Element Spacing to adjust the spacing between elements. Tightening that spacing a little is fairly unnoticeable.
However, FADE IN: is used only once, at the beginning of a screenplay, to indicate that the action is beginning. It is typed two spaces below the title of the screenplay at the left margin. One line space follows the words FADE IN: and the first scene heading of the screenplay begins on the next line.
Formatting Elements of a Screenplay. The standard industry-standard screenplay format includes the following : Courier typeface in font size 12, double-spaced lines.
To remove the page break, place the cursor at the start of the paragraph thats been pushed to the next page, go to the Insert menu and click the checked Page Break menu item (Mac) or the shaded Page Break icon (Windows).
