Detaching the old volume In order to detach the old 10GB volume from your instance, you need to first stop the instance. Afterwards, go to the Volumes section of your AWS EC2 console and detach the external 10GB EBS volume that was mounted on drive D.
In the Create Image from EBS Snapshot dialog box, complete the fields to create your AMI, then choose Create. If youre re-creating a parent instance, then choose the same options as the parent instance.
When you create an AMI of an existing EC2 instance, a snapshot is taken for all the volumes that are attached to the instance. The snapshot includes the device mappings. You cant use snapshots to launch a new instance, but you can use them to replace volumes on an existing instance.
A snapshot is of an EBS volume where you are able to save state and reboot with the same data at a certain point in time. An AMI is similar, but its for the EC2 instances themselves. You cannot take a snapshot of a non ebs backed instance, but you can create a AMI (system image) of one.
Reducing AWS EBS Volumes Create a snapshot of the root volume: Create a second Amazon EBS volume: Create an empty 8GB Amazon EBS volume in the same availability zone. attach both volumes to the instance and again note all device name details. Restart the Instance and SSH in. Stop the instance.
Your answer Snapshot the volume. Create a new smaller EBS volume. Attach the new volume. Format the new volume. Mount the new volume. Copy data from the old volume to the new volume. Prepare the new volume. Detach and unmount the old volume.
You can only increase the size of your Amazon EBS volume. You cant decrease an EBS volumes size. To use a smaller volume, create a smaller volume. Then, use an application-level tool to migrate your data to the smaller volume.
You cant decrease the size of an EBS volume. However, you can create a smaller volume and then migrate your data to it using an application-level tool such as rsync (Linux instances) or robocopy (Windows instances).
