Overall, approximately 80 percent of all pregnancies with Down syndrome will be identified through the AFP PLUS Quad Test. However, detection rates vary with maternal age, ranging from 70 percent in women under 35 to more than 90 percent in women 35 and older.
A positive test with a high AFP suggests a birth defect like spina bifida. Thats typically a result of 2.5 times or more than the average level of AFP youd expect to see at that point in your pregnancy. A positive test with low AFP could mean a problem like Down syndrome or Edwards syndrome.
Between 15 and 20 weeks, AFP levels typically range between 10 and 150 ng/mL. Adult blood levels greater than 200 ng/mL in patients with liver cirrhosis strongly indicate hepatocellular carcinoma.
Lower than usual AFP levels may indicate that the fetus has a genetic disorder such as Down syndrome. Its important to understand that irregular AFP levels dont automatically mean the fetus has a genetic condition or a neural tube defect. Irregular AFP levels can also mean: You are having multiples, such as twins.
Substances in your blood which are markers of Down syndrome and a specific ultrasound marker will be measured. The blood markers are pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and human chorionic gonadotropin (free beta-hCG). The ultrasound marker is nuchal translucency (NT) thickness.
Normal and Critical Findings AFP levels in men and non-pregnant women vary by age and race but typically range from 0 to 40 ng/mL. Maternal AFP levels increase during pregnancy from about the 14th week of gestation until about 32 weeks. Between 15 and 20 weeks, AFP levels typically range between 10 and 150 ng/mL.
This test is a screening assay to identify pregnancies that may have an increased risk for neural tube defects (NTD). A screen-positive result indicates that the calculated alpha-fetoprotein multiple of the median (MoM) is 2.50 or greater and may indicate an increased risk for NTD.
