There are five main categories of abnormal Pap smear results within the Bethesda system: Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). Squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL). Atypical squamous cells that may or may not be HSIL (ASC-H). Atypical glandular cells (AGC). Cancer.
High Grade Abnormal Pap Test Results High grade cervical cells identified by Pap test results can indicate the presence of precancerous cervical dysplasiawhich can be caused by strains of HPV that are associated with a high risk of developing canceror, sometimes, cervical cancer itself.
An abnormal result means that cell changes were found on your cervix. This usually does not mean that you have cervical cancer. Abnormal changes on your cervix are likely caused by HPV. The changes may be minor (low-grade) or serious (high-grade).
A normal, also called negative, Pap smear result indicates that no evidence of abnormal cells were found in the sample. An abnormal, or positive, result on a Pap smear indicates that abnormal cells were detected in the sample and additional treatment or testing may be necessary.
The more serious changes are often called precancer because they are not yet cancer, but they can turn into cancer over time. In rare cases, an abnormal Pap test can show that you may have cancer. You will need other tests to be sure. The earlier you find cervical cancer, the easier it is to treat.
ASC-US is the most common abnormal Pap test result. ASC-US stands for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. Squamous refers to the type of cells that make up the tissue that covers the cervix. LSILThis means that the cervical cells show changes that are mildly abnormal.
Pap smear tests are usually classified as preventative medicine, which is important for checking your health. Cells are scraped from the opening of the cervix and examined under a microscope to see if there are any abnormal cells.
In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection. Inflammation in the pelvic area. Normal cellular changes that occur with age.
One of the most common abnormal Pap smear causes is the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV). ing to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). It can affect both women and men, and generally it doesnt show any signs or symptoms.
Class 5 is cancer that has started to grow deeper into the cervix. This stage of cancer can spread to other parts of the body. The new classification system replaces the traditional classes with terms describing the microscopic changes in cervical cells.
