The first step to protecting PII is centralized control. Centralized control ensures that the data is accessed only by authorized people and not shared with unauthorized parties. Additionally, it helps you track who has access to the data and where its being stored.
Further, PII is defined as information: (i) that directly identifies an individual (e.g., name, address, social security number or other identifying number or code, telephone number, email address, etc.) or (ii) by which an agency intends to identify specific individuals in conjunction with other data elements, i.e.,
Info such as business phone numbers and race, religion, gender, workplace, and job titles are typically not considered PII. But they should still be treated as sensitive, linkable info because they could identify an individual when combined with other data.
PII (personally identifiable information) or SPI (sensitive personal information), as used in information security and privacy laws, is information that can be used on its own or with other information to identify, contact, or locate a single person, or to identify an individual in context.
Personally identifiable information (PII), also known as P4 data, is a specific category of particularly sensitive data defined as: Unencrypted electronic information that includes an individuals first name or initial, and last name, in combination with any one or more of the following: Social Security number (SSN).
Personally Identifiable Information (PII)
PII can include unique individual identifiers or combinations of identifiers, such as an individuals name, Social Security number, date and place of birth, mothers maiden name, biometric data, etc.
Examples of PII include, but are not limited to: Name: full name, maiden name, mothers maiden name, or alias.
