As far as I know, a Pap smear doesnt affect your uterus enough to alter your period. If you do notice anything different after your exam (other than a bit of spotting or bleeding, which isnt uncommon), be sure and tell your healthcare professional.
Yes, its totally okay to get a pelvic exam when youre on your period. But most nurses and doctors would rather do your pelvic exam on a non-period day when youre not bleeding, or at least not bleeding heavily. Thats because menstrual fluid (aka period blood) can affect the results of some lab tests.
A colposcopy is a procedure to find out whether there are abnormal cells on or in a womans cervix or vagina. The cervix is the part of the womb that sits in the vagina. Abnormalities tend to occur at the opening of the cervix to the birth canal, where it enters the womb.
Wondering if you can still come to your gynecology appointment when youre on your period? Most of the time, yes. If its for your annual exam, sometimes the Pap Smear Test can be inconclusive if youre bleeding heavily, but if its one of the lighter days of your period, you should be fine.
However, bleeding usually happens due to the cervix being irritated by the test, rather than an indicator that something is wrong. A small amount of blood (also known as spotting), is normal. Its quite common and it can happen for many reasons, which we talk through in the rest of this blog..
A colposcopy is relatively painless. You may feel slight pressure when the speculum enters your vagina. You may feel a slight burning or stinging when the solution comes into contact with your cervix. If you need a biopsy, you may feel a sharp pinch or a sensation like a period cramp when the tissue sample is excised.
Normal vaginal bleeding should not get in the way of a Pap smear or pelvic exam. An OB/GYN still can perform an exam when youre on your period, but its also OK to reschedule the appointment if you are feeling uncomfortable, said Rosemary C. Sousa, M.D., OB/GYN with Norton Womens Care.
Its still possible to get your Pap smear done despite being on your period. However, there may be a risk of inaccurate results, especially if your flow is heavy during the day of your exam. As a rule of thumb, its best to call your OB-GYN if you have a Pap scheduled and have unexpectedly started your period.
