What Is the First Cut Off a Log Called? The first log cut above the stump is called a butt log or butt cut. Butt off refers to cutting a piece of a log due to a defect. Most of a trees value is in the butt log.
The most common methods are plain sawing, quarter sawing, and rift sawing. *None of these sawing methods can guarantee the same results on 100% of boards. See for yourself how each method can have a striking impact on the overall look of a hardwood floor. The plain sawing method is the most common.
The most common methods are plain sawing, quarter sawing, and rift sawing.
There are four different types of sawing patterns. The patterns vary in appearance, size, and price. The patterns are flat sawn (plain sawn in softwoods), quarter sawn (vertical grain in softwoods), rift sawn, and live sawn.
Lumber cut styles are cuts that are made when milling logs into usable building materials. The four cut styles well look at here are live sawn, plain (or flat) sawn, quarter sawn, and rift sawn.
With cant sawing, the first cuts are made across the top of the log and flipped 180 degrees to saw the second cuts across the opposite face. Once rotated 90 degrees to saw the third side, and rotated another 180 degrees to saw the last side, the log is squared into a center piece called a cant.
The four types of wood cuts are plain, quarter, rift and live. The cut used can depend on intended use of the wood and species of the wood, and quality of logs, and can be influenced by ways to maximize yield, emphasize grain, and avoid defects in the log.
Quarter sawn lumber is defined as wood where the annular growth rings intersect the face of the board at a 60 to 90 degree angle. When cutting this lumber at the sawmill, each log is sawed at a radial angle into four quarters, hence the name. Dramatic flecking is also present in red oak and white oak. Find out more.
Plain-sawn is the most common type of cut where a log is repeatedly run through a saw and much of the lumber has wood grain nearly parallel to the width of the boards.
