Windows LAPS supports a password history feature for Windows Server Active Directory domain-joined clients and domain controllers. Password history is supported only when password encryption is enabled. Password history isnt supported if you store clear-text passwords in Windows Server Active Directory.
ACL contains a FIND( ) function that enables you to search for a string in a specific field, or in an entire record. The FIND( ) function is not case sensitive, searches for both EBCDIC and ASCII character strings, and returns a true (T) value if the string is found. Examples: FIND(Vancouver)
These passwords are stored securely within Active Directory and are only accessible to users who have been granted permission through Access Control Lists (ACLs). The security of the password transmissions from the client to the server is ensured by the use of Kerberos version 5 and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).
Yes. As long as permissions are locked down in the attributes of the Active Directory, Microsoft LAPS is extremely secure.
LAPS stores the password for each computers local administrator account in Active Directory, secured in a confidential attribute in the computers corresponding Active Directory object.
To retrieve the password, go to your Azure portal and navigate to Devices All Devices Local administrator password recovery (Preview) and find the selected device. Click on Show local administrator password beside the listed device.
