Dorsal, Dorsal Stripe or Eel Stripe A dorsal stripe is a dark stripe that runs down the back all the way from the mane to the tail. Its most often seen on donkeys, mules, mustangs, duns, pony breeds and the Przewalskis horse. A second stripe horizontal can run across the shoulders as well.
A strip is a band of white that extends in a more or less even stripe down the bridge of the nose. A strip may connect to a star at the top and extend to the white markings on the horses nose. Or they may be broken so there are three separate facial markings on the face, a star, strip and snip.
Leg bars and markings Also called zebra bars, tiger stripes, or garters, leg bars are the most common accessory to the dorsal stripe. Leg bars are most commonly seen on or above the knees and hocks, and reflect the underlying coat color. Leg bars on bay duns are black within the points, and reddish above them.
Star. A star is a white spot on a horses forehead, between the eyes. A faint star may only appear as a few white hairs, or the star can be large enough it covers the whole forehead area. Stars can be very symmetrical in shape, like spots or diamonds, or they may appear as irregular splotches.
Facial markings Blaze: a wide white stripe down the middle of the face. Strip, stripe, or race: a narrow white stripe down the middle of the face. Bald face: a very wide blaze, extending to or past the eyes. Star: a white marking between or above the eyes. Snip: a white marking on the muzzle, between the nostrils.
Star: A white marking between or above the horses eyes. Stars come in varying sizes and shapes including round, half-moon, heart, oval and/or crescent. Snip: Like a star (above) in varying sizes and shapes, but located on the nose or muzzle. Strip: A narrow white strip that runs down the middle of a horses face.
White markings on the legs that extend past the fetlock are called Socks. White markings that extend all the way to the knees or hocks are called Stockings. Dark spots inside the white markings are called Ermine Spots. Not all white leg markings touch the hooves.
