A snip is a patch of white on the horses nose. It may be a small spot between the nostrils, or it may extend over the whole nose.
Stocking: The marking starts above the hoof and goes beyond the knee and may include the entire leg. A similar marking is called the half-stocking or half-cannon.
White markings in horses result from the lack of melanocytes in the skin and hairs. The trait is characteristic of most breeds of domestic horses. In the breeding of the Polish Konik horse, which should resemble its wild ancestors, the lack of white markings was accepted as a selection criterion.
Horses can have from 1 4 socks. Also referred to as an anklet. Boot: The boot extends higher than a sock, but below the knee. Stocking: The marking starts above the hoof and goes beyond the knee and may include the entire leg.
Facial markings Blaze: a wide white stripe down the middle of the face. Strip, stripe, or race: a narrow white stripe down the middle of the face. Bald face: a very wide blaze, extending to or past the eyes. Star: a white marking between or above the eyes. Snip: a white marking on the muzzle, between the nostrils.
The most common horse leg markings are a coronet, heel, half-pastern, pastern, fetlock, sock, half-stocking, and stocking. Interestingly, horses with white leg markings will also have light-colored hooves on those legs.
From tallest to shortest, common leg markings are: Stocking: white marking that extends at least to the bottom of the knee or hock, sometimes higher. Sock: white marking that extends higher than the fetlock but not as high as the knee or hock.
Fetlock/Ankle: White extends up to the top of the fetlock. Half-Cannon/Half-Stocking/Sock: White extends from the hoof up to and including the lower half of the cannon bone. Cannon/Three-quarter Stocking: White extends to the proximal end of the cannon bone below the carpus (knee).
