Bend-Or spots (also called Bend Or spots, smuts, or grease spots) are a type of spotted marking found on horses. They range in color from dark red to black.
Snip: Like a star (above) in varying sizes and shapes, but located on the nose or muzzle. Strip: A narrow white strip that runs down the middle of a horses face. (A crooked or wavy strip is sometimes called a race.) Blaze: Where the white vertical line is wider and more prominent than a strip (above).
White markings in horses result from the lack of melanocytes in the skin and hairs. The trait is characteristic of most breeds of domestic horses. In the breeding of the Polish Konik horse, which should resemble its wild ancestors, the lack of white markings was accepted as a selection criterion.
Horses may develop white markings over areas where there was an injury to the animal, either to cover scar tissue from a cut or abrasion, or to reflect harm to the underlying skin or nerves.
White markings on the legs that extend past the fetlock are called Socks. White markings that extend all the way to the knees or hocks are called Stockings. Dark spots inside the white markings are called Ermine Spots. Not all white leg markings touch the hooves. Some horses have white knee patches.
A snip is a patch of white on the horses nose. It may be a small spot between the nostrils, or it may extend over the whole nose.
Various independent studies have shown that the extent of white markings in horses is highly heritable and it has been previously demonstrated that the horses basic coat colour has a docHub impact on the expression of white.
