Your knee ligaments work together to keep the knee stable and moving properly. An ACL MCL tear is a severe injury of the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament. When a combined ACL MCL injury occurs, one may feel or hear a pop, followed by swelling, pain, and joint instability. A torn ACL requires reconstruction. A tendon graft is taken from the patient and the torn ligament is removed. The surgeon will drill tunnels into the thigh bone (or femur) and the shin bone (or tibia). This enables surgeons to accurately position and attach the graft. The graft is then secured with screws or other devices.
