Insert an Index Entry Select the text you want to include in the index. Click the References tab. Click the Mark Entry in the Index group. Adjust the index entrys settings and choose an index entry option: Click the Mark or Mark All button. Repeat the process for your other index entries. Click Close when youre done.
To update an index in Word, place the cursor into the index that you want to update. Then press the F9 key on your keyboard. Alternatively, right-click the index in the Word document. Then choose the Update Field command from the pop-up menu that appears.
XE stands for Index Entry. Word switches hidden formatting on as soon as you mark an entry so it doesnt take long before your document starts to look messy. But dont worry - when you print your document, field codes are not printed.
In the Find what box, type (or copy): ^d XE. Leave the Replace with box empty and click Replace All. Hit CTRL+A to select all the text in the document. Hit CTRL+H to open the Find and Replace window. Type two spaces in the Find what field. Type one space in the Replace with field. Click Replace All.
Create the index Click where you want to add the index. On the References tab, in the Index group, click Insert Index. In the Index dialog box, you can choose the format for text entries, page numbers, tabs, and leader characters. You can change the overall look of the index by choosing from the Formats dropdown menu.
To open the Snipping Tool, select Start, enter snipping tool, then select it from the results. Select New to take a screenshot.
