Source-Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) measures contextual citation impact by weighting citations based on the total number of citations in a subject field. This unique perspective enables direct comparison of sources in different subject fields.
This value is calculated by dividing the number of citations received by the journal in the given year from primary items (articles, reviews and conference papers) to primary items published in the three previous years by the number of primary items published in the journal in the three previous years.
A journal with a SJR value 1.0 has above average citation potential and journal with a SJR value 1.0 has below average citation potential.
SNIP is calculated as the number of citations given in the present year to publications in the past three years divided by the total number of publications in the past three years. A journal with a SNIP of 1.0 has the median (not mean) number of citations for journals in that field.
A journal with a SJR value 1.0 has above average citation potential and journal with a SJR value 1.0 has below average citation potential.
Scopus features two such citation indicators to measure a journals impact; SNIP (Source Normalised Impact per Paper) and SJR (SCImago Journal Rank).
SNIP is defined as the ratio of the raw Impact per Publication divided by the Relative Database Citation Potential. Impact factor or IF measures the number of times an average paper in a particular journal has been referred to.
CiteScore uses a similar methodology and includes book chapters, conference papers and data papers. It uses a different time period than JIF. SNIP and SJR use the same dataset as Citescore. SNIP uses a similar ratio but normalizes based on subject.
