an entire set of 23 human chromosomes is called a genome the human genome is composed of 3 billion base pairs variation at a single base pair is called a snip or single nucleotide polymorphism when the body makes new cells it doesnt make many mistakes but nobodys perfect sometimes when the genome is copied to make a new cell a single base pair gets left out added or substituted single base pair substitutions create slips there are around 10 million snips in the human genome which account for many of the genetic differences between you and everyone else on the planet some snips account for differences in appearance others can affect how we develop diseases or respond to drugs most snips however seem to lead to no observable differences between people at all since variants are passed on from one generation to the next the number of differences between your DNA and your neighbors can tell you how closely you are related to each other

To be classified as a SNP, two or more versions of a sequence must each be present in at least one percent of the general population. SNPs occur throughout the human genomeabout one in every 300 nucleotide base pairs.
Local, target, SNP discovery relies mostly on direct DNA sequencing or on denaturing high performance liquid chromatography (dHPLC). The number of SNP genotyping methods has exploded in recent years and many robust methods are currently available.
Whole genome sequencing has been widely used in SNP identification and analysis. Typically, hundreds of thousands of SNPs are identified through genome-wide comparison between a targeted genotype and the reference genome. These SNPs might be useful in developing large-scale, genotyping-based breeding selection tools.
The SNPforID consortium developed 52 SNPs for individual identification [35]. Also, Kim et al. [34] developed a SNP-based individual assignment system containing 30 SNP loci for Korean individuals. Lou et al.
Products. There is one DNA test available which genotypes around 640,000 SNPs of the human genome with an Illumina Global Screening Array (GSA) customized chip. The test provides ancestry and health information in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada.
Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) detection technologies are used to scan for new polymorphisms and to determine the allele(s) of a known polymorphism in target sequences.
PI can be calculated under the assumption that all individuals are unrelated or under that the assumption that individuals may be related (PI-sibs). Figure 4 shows that at least 17 SNPs are required to achieve uniqueness in 2115 Dutch samples (PI is 3.3 10 7 for unrelated individuals and PI-sibs is 4.4 10 4).
For human sequences, the Sequence Viewer search function can be used to search for reference SNPs (e.g. rs4970989) from the NCBI SNP database. If the SNP is found in the assembly/molecule, the view moves to the vicinity of the SNP and a marker is automatically added at the SNP position.
An example of an SNP is the substitution of a C for a G in the nucleotide sequence AACGAT, thereby producing the sequence AACCAT. The DNA of humans may contain many SNPs, since these variations occur at a rate of one in every 100300 nucleotides in the human genome.
