Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) is a sophisticated metric that intrinsically accounts for field-specific differences in citation practices. It does so by comparing each journals citations per publication with the citation potential of its field, defined as the set of publications citing that journal.
Scopus features two such citation indicators to measure a journals impact; SNIP (Source Normalised Impact per Paper) and SJR (SCImago Journal Rank).
Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) measures contextual citation impact by weighting citations based on the total number of citations in a subject field. The impact of a single citation is given higher value in subject areas where citations are less likely, and vice versa.
SNIP (Source Normalized Impact per Paper) The number of publications of a source in the past three years. IPP. The impact per publication, calculated as the number of citations given in the present year to publications in the past three years divided by the total number of publications in the past three years.
A journal with a SNIP of 1.0 has the median (not mean) number of citations for journals in that field. SNIP only considers for peer reviewed articles, conference papers and reviews. SNIP scores are available from the two databases listed below: CWTS Journal Indicators and Scopus.
SNIP is calculated as the number of citations given in the present year to publications in the past three years divided by the total number of publications in the past three years.
Scopus features two such citation indicators to measure a journals impact; SNIP (Source Normalised Impact per Paper) and SJR (SCImago Journal Rank).
