To split name in Excel (first name, the middle name and the last name), there are two easy ways the text to column method and the formula method. In the text to column method, a delimiter character needs to be specified. In the formula method, the LEFT, FIND, RIGHT, and LEN functions are used to split names.
To separate first and last names in Excel, highlight your list of names and select Text to columns. In the pop-up window, choose Delimited and select Space from the options. Once finished, Excel should separate all first and last names into different columns.
Enter the formula of =RIGHT(A2,LEN(A2)-FIND( ,A2,1)) in another blank cell, Cell C2 in this case. 3. Copy those two formulas down and you will see the full name column is split to the first name and last name columns as shown below.
Get first name from name =FIND(findtext, withintext) =LEFT(text, [numchars]) =LEFT(B3, FIND( , B3)-1)
Extracting a First Name in Google Docs Select an empty cell. Type =LEFT( and click in the cell containing your name data. Type a comma, followed by FIND( , and then click on the containing your name data again. Insert a closed bracket, followed by -1 and a final closed bracket. Press Enter to extract the first name.
One of the shortest ways to do this task is by using Text to Columns, a built-in feature in Google Sheets that separates your text with a delimiter. A delimiter is something that separates two values. Thankfully, since first and last names are separated by spaces, this would be a perfect delimiter.
Heres how: Select the range you want to split into first and last names. Open the Data menu, and select the Split Text To Columns option. A separator selection menu will appear floating over the cells. Choose Space from the Separator menu. The names in the selected range will be split into first and last names.
