hey guys Jeffrey here for a moment and today we wanted to talk about what everyone is too afraid to ask but is dying to know the differences between raw JPEG and TIFF one of my favorite features about the moment app is the ability to switch between the different photo formats JPEG raw and TIFF see the native camera app only lets you shoot in JPEG which really limits your baking I mean capturing capabilities okay so letamp;#39;s talk about that JPEG JPEGs are the most common type of file format for photos itamp;#39;s a compressed file optimized for storage and ease of use but through that compression some of the details are lost after a JPEG is made much like this delicious cake not much can be changed we can try to mask out those blown out highlights with a filter or this vanilla cake with chocolate icing but weamp;#39;ll all know itamp;#39;s still there next we have raw now donamp;#39;t be afraid of raw I used to be afraid of raw but now I love it I shootin it all the time and th

If youre going to do heavy editing, its better to shoot in RAW. But if youre going to be sharing the file, then its a good idea to convert it to a TIFF. Does TIFF lose quality? The short answer is no, TIFF doesnt compress your images and you dont lose quality every time you open and re-save the file.
No, they are essentially the same file type; the only difference is that one acronym (TIF) is short for the other acronym (TIFF). So regardless of which acronym you use, both refer to the same image format. The two acronyms are used interchangeably, so theres no need to worry about which one youre using.
TIFF is best for any raster images that you intend to edit and is relied on to preserve quality.
TIFF files store much more image data than their JPEG counterparts. This makes them a favorite with photographers due to their stunning image quality. However, the higher resolution requires much larger file sizes meaning they can be awkward to use and more difficult to store.
Because of their large size, TIFF files usually arent used for everyday marketing content. While a TIFF file might be the original creative file, it will likely be converted to another format to be used in slide decks, websites, and other marketing materials. Avoid TIFF files for: Web graphics.
A TIFF will enable you to store richer, more detailed images. Its good practice to save your original (or source) photos as TIFF files. JPEGs, meanwhile, might be a better choice for exporting your finished edits because theyre easier to share and print.
Tiff images do not contain as much camera information as raw images. If the editor uses the camera information, e.g., DxO PhotoLab, to assist in the editing that information is stripped. Otherwise the edits function much the same. Tiff does allow multiple layers and alpha channels that are unavailable to raw images.
Both are lossless, meaning theres no degradation in image quality. When saving as 16-bit, Capture One Pro offers only ZIP compression as it is much more efficient at this color depth than LZW.
