Depending on the size of the volumes, it can take several minutes for the AMI-creation process to complete (sometimes up to 24 hours). You may find it more efficient to create snapshots of your volumes prior to creating your AMI.
The easiest way is to check your registered email with subject Welcome to Amazon Web Services recieved from no-reply-aws@amazon.com email address. This will give the exact date when your account was created. Save this answer. Show activity on this post.
In the navigation pane, under Elastic Block Store, choose Snapshots. Choose the snapshot and choose Actions, Create Image. In the Create Image from EBS Snapshot dialog box, complete the fields to create your AMI, then choose Create.
To set the properties of the root volume for an EC2 instance, you must identify the device name of the root volume for your Amazon Machine Image (AMI). Then, you can use the BlockDeviceMapping property of an AWS::EC2::Instance resource to set the properties of the root volume.
You can find this attribute by going to the EC2 console and choosing AMIs on the left navigation menu. You should see a new column on the AMIs page called Creation Date. To sort your AMIs by creation date, simply click on the column header, or use the search box to filter your AMI results by date.
Acceptable formats include: YYYY - MM - DD T hh : mm : ss. sss TZD (UTC) , for example, 2014-10-01T20:30:00.000Z.
Snapshot is a point in time backup of specific volume while AMI is is backup of the entire EC2 instance that might have multiple attached volumes, exactly like virtual machines. With Packer, you can build automated machine images including AMIs for EC2, VMDK/VMX files for VMware, OVF exports for VirtualBox, etc.
Open the CloudTrail console, and then choose Event history from the navigation pane. For Filter, choose Resource name from the dropdown menu. For Enter resource name, enter the instance ID. (Optional) For Time range, select a time range.
An AMI includes the following: One or more snapshots. Instance-store-backed AMIs include a template for the root volume of the instance (for example, an operating system, an application server, and applications). Launch permissions that control which AWS accounts can use the AMI to launch instances.
An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is a template that contains a software configuration (for example, an operating system, an application server, and applications). From an AMI, you launch an instance, which is a copy of the AMI running as a virtual server in the cloud.
