A colposcopy is a procedure to find out whether there are abnormal cells on or in a womans cervix or vagina. The cervix is the part of the womb that sits in the vagina. Abnormalities tend to occur at the opening of the cervix to the birth canal, where it enters the womb.
Colposcopy. If you have certain symptoms that could mean cancer, if your Pap test shows abnormal cells, or if your HPV test is positive, you will most likely need to have a test called colposcopy. You will lie on the exam table as you do with a pelvic exam.
Colposcopies primarily check for cancer cells or cells that could become cancer if not treated (also called cervical dysplasia). Your provider will look for these cells in your cervix, vagina and external genitals (vulva). Colposcopies can also test for genital warts and noncancerous growths called polyps.
Scissors biopsy Also called a snip biopsy, this type of skin biopsy is used to remove a hanging growth from the skin. Just as the name implies, your dermatologist uses surgical-grade scissors to cut off the hanging growth. If youre told that you need a colposcopy, dont panic, says Coleman. Women come to me saying, Oh, my gosh. I could have cancer! But most women do not have cancer when they come in for a colposcopy.
Your provider may do a colposcopy if they find problems or abnormal cells during a pelvic exam or Pap test. You may also need one if you have an HPV (human papillomavirus) strain known to cause cervical cancer. The healthcare provider can see certain changes in cervical and vaginal tissues through the colposcope.
During the Pap smear, a healthcare professional takes a cell sample from the cervix. Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the cells in the lower part of the uterus. This region is called the cervix, it is small and narrow, and it connects the uterus to the vagina.
During a Pap test, a tool called a speculum holds the vaginal walls apart. A sample of cells from the cervix is collected using a soft brush and a flat scraping device called a spatula (1 and 2).
235,223 referrals to colposcopy were reported in 2021-22, an increase of 33.2% from 2020-21 (176,561). 67.7% of referrals were reported as being triggered by a screening test.
