The initial strength of the patellar tendon allograft is 1.52 times greater than a normal ACL 18, 19, 20. There is probably a 50% loss of allograft strength as healing occurs [21], therefore it is recommended to use at least a 15-mm width of tendon in order to compensate for this loss.
1, 2 Still, the most commonly used autografts for ACL reconstruction are the bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) and hamstring tendons (HT). There is some evidence to suggest that BPTB autografts produce more pain than HT autografts both in the immediate postoperative period as well as in the long term.
An allograft, where the replacement tendon comes from a cadaver, is three times more likely to retear than an autograft. This is true no matter your age. However, the difference in retear risk is docHub only for younger patients, especially those 22 and younger.
Allograft: In this type of surgery, the surgeon replaces your torn ACL with a tendon graft from a donor. Yes, you read that right from a donor! Autograft: In contrast, an autograft involves taking tissue from your own body, usually from your hamstring tendon or patellar tendon, to reconstruct the ACL.
What is an ACL? ACL stands for anterior cruciate ligament. It is one of two ligaments in the center of the knee (the other is the PCL), which helps connect the femur to the tibia. The ACL originates in a large notch at the end of the femur and runs diagonally to insert on the top surface of the tibia.
A patients own tissue - an autograft - can often be used for a surgical reconstruction procedure. Autograft tissue is the safest and fastest-healing tissue that can be used. However, harvesting autograft tissue creates a second surgical site from which the patient must recover.
ACL reconstruction with BPTP autograft is a surgical procedure that replaces the injured ACL with an autograft containing patellar tendon and bony attachments. The new ACL is harvested from the patellar tendon that connects the bottom of the kneecap (patella) to the top of the shinbone (tibia).
