in a previous video we talked about the need for authenticating to a wireless network and of course there are many different ways that you could authenticate to a network and weamp;#39;ve used many of these different authentication methods on our different networks through the years the most common type of authentication someone would use is their username and their password and itamp;#39;s not unusual to add other types of authentication factors along with the username and password although weamp;#39;ll sometimes use these authentication methods for wired networks itamp;#39;s very common to also see this on wireless networks thatamp;#39;s mostly because wireless networks are sending and receiving into the air and anyone who happens to be nearby with a wireless device could attempt to connect to that wireless network many of the types of authentication weamp;#39;ll use for wireless networks are built on a standard framework called the extensible authentication protocol or eap the

American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) sends the user name and password in clear text. Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) sends clear text between the user and the server. PAP is the default authentication type.
The PPP authentication protocols are Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) and Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP). PPP Authentication Protocols oracle.com pppsvrconfig.intro-7 oracle.com pppsvrconfig.intro-7
The Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) provides a simple method for the peer to establish its identity using a two-way handshake. After the link is established, an ID and password pair is repeatedly sent by the peer to the authenticator until authentication is acknowledged or the connection is terminated. CHAP is a stronger authentication method than PAP, because the secret is not transmitted over the link, and because it provides protection against repeated attacks during the life of the link. As a result, if both PAP and CHAP authentication are enabled, CHAP authentication is always performed first.
The PPP authentication protocols are Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) and Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP). Each protocol uses a secrets database that contains identification information, or security credentials, for each caller that is permitted to link to the local machine.
Basic authentication is a very simple authentication scheme that is built into the HTTP protocol. The client sends HTTP requests with the Authorization header that contains the Basic word followed by a space and a base64-encoded username:password string.
The main difference between PAP and CHAP is that PAP uses a Two-Way Handshake and sends the password in clear-text form, whereas CHAP uses a Three-Way Handshake and never sends the password between the parties. As a result, CHAP is much more secure than PAP. PAP vs. CHAP: Whats the Difference? - Rublon Rublon blog pap-vs-chap-whats-the-differ Rublon blog pap-vs-chap-whats-the-differ
PAP is more susceptible to cyberattacks than CHAP because it doesnt have the built-in safeguards that CHAP has. Specifically, CHAP doesnt transmit passwords, has an ongoing authentication mechanism, and uses an encrypted calculation to help each entity verify the identity of the other.
